Saturday 19th JanuaryToday was a day when my hard work throughout last year was to be rewarded. I have been waiting and anticipating for this day to arrive. I would be receiving an edusave award for being the top 10% in Victoria School. I had received a letter from the district office to inform me that I was being invited to the Edusave Awards Presentation to receive my scholarship. I was exhilarated to have achieved such a prestigious award.
After my Tamil tuition in the morning, I hurriedly gobbled up my lunch and set off to the venue of my prize presentation. I spotted many people from different schools arriving to get their presentation awards. As I was in Secondary 1 last year, I had to wait for a long time before my name was called. I was quite fidgety in my seat but I had a VS friend next to me who was also receiving a prize. We chatted to while the time away. After what might have seemed as an eternity, my friend and I queued at the side of the stage to wait our turns. Before my name was called, I was knock-kneed.
I was receiving my prize from the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Abdullah Tarmugi. I thought my name was called out rather loud. I timidly ran up the stairs onto the stage and walked briskly towards him. I shook his hand and he congratulated me and presented me edusave award. I returned back to my place and opened my folder and took out the cheque. A $500 cheque was written in my name. I stared at the cheque in wonder. I could buy many things with a $500 cheque. My hard work and effort last year had truly paid off and I hope that I can clinch the top 5% in the next year.

Friday 18th JanuaryToday was a day when a close relation was being separated from me. My grandmother was leaving for Canada to visit my other uncles and aunties and would only be returning after the year is out. My grandmother was leaving early in the morning. I got out of my bed and splashed some cold water over my face. I hurriedly put on my school clothes and went to the airport with my family.
At the airport, I saw my grandmother with my uncle. As we were checking in the bags, we discovered that the one of the bags was too heavy. We had to take it back and remove some things. Only then the bag could be checked in. Before my grandmother passed through the visitor’s gate we said goodbye to her. My eyes welled with tears. The grandma who used to cook my favourite dishes was leaving. I wiped away my tears. Then my grandma approached me and thrust a parcel into my hand. “This is your birthday present, ” she whispered as she kissed me goodbye. “Could I open it please?” I mumbled with a pleading look. She nodded with a smile and a loving gesture. I quickly opened the present and to my own wonder found a transformer toy. I was jubilant. I was in ecstasy.
In the meantime she passed the gate for visitors. I thanked her profusely through the glass window. She was happy that I was delighted with the gift. She knew just what I wanted. She is truly a wonderful grandmother. I started playing with the toy and transforming it into a robot. I wanted to take it to school but my parents refused. It was s day of mixed feelings as I would sorely miss my grandmother but I had something that I had wanted for a long time.

Saturday 12th JanuaryAlthough the day started well, it ended up being a dreadful day. After my Tamil tuition in the morning, I set out in high spirits for my cricket training in VS. The sun’s heat was unbearable. Its heat rays pierced my back. Beads of my sweat rolled down my back as we practiced on the field for two whole hours. After a refreshing drink of water we were allowed to play a game of football. However the game of football ended up in a tragedy.
As Sudarshan was about to cross the ball, he slipped and fell on the turf with a sickening crunch. He fell on his hand and his hand was in an awkward position. He had fractured his bone for sure. He was screaming in pain. We rushed to his aid and tried to help him to stand up. We assisted him to the General Office; I was annoyed that the football game had ended abruptly because of a mere accident. But I had a great pang of sympathy for my friend. My feelings were contradicting my thoughts. Brushing my disappointment aside, I decided to help Sudarshan to the hospital. Throughout our journey every scream emitted from his lips was heartache for me.
His fibula was fractured. One part of the bone was protruding out. It was a horrifying sight. He was sent for an X-Ray. His bone had to be pulled back and the whole bone had to be aligned again. On hearing that he would not be able to represent Victoria School in the Nationals Cricket Competition; he was overcome with sadness and grief. I cheered him up. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I had to leave before the operation. I consoled him and wished him a speedy recovery. All in all I was a friend in deed helping a friend in need.
